Choking first aid and CPR are often taught separately, but in a real emergency they can flow into one another. Understanding the transition helps you keep acting instead of freezing.
This is general information, not medical advice. Certified CPR training is essential for hands-on competence.
While the person is responsive
Continue back blows and abdominal thrusts. Keep going as long as they remain conscious and the object hasn't cleared.
If they become unresponsive
Lower them safely to the floor, ensure emergency services are on the way, and begin CPR if trained. When opening the airway for breaths, look inside and remove any visible object — but avoid blind finger sweeps.
Why training matters
CPR technique — compression depth, rate, and rescue breaths — is hard to learn from an article. A short certified course builds the muscle memory you'll rely on under stress.
